HERB SPOTLIGHT

WITHANIA

Withania somnifera — commonly known as ashwagandha — is a small woody shrub native to India, North Africa, and the Middle East. It has been a cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years, traditionally used to restore vitality, build resilience, and support the body during periods of physical and mental stress.

It belongs to a class of herbs known as adaptogens — plants that help the body adapt to stress and return to a state of balance.

The root is the primary medicinal part, containing a group of active compounds called withanolides which are responsible for its therapeutic effects.

Withania works by helping the body regulate its response to stress — almost like a reset button. But also has effects in:

Cortisol regulation — reduces chronically elevated cortisol, the stress hormone that drives exhaustion, weight gain, and hormonal imbalance when it never switches off

Nervous system calming — shifts the body out of chronic fight or flight — the wired, anxious, can't-switch-off feeling that underlies burnout and poor sleep

Hormone balancing — cortisol and progesterone share the same building blocks. Chronic stress prioritises cortisol — leaving progesterone depleted. Withania helps break this cycle.

Thyroid support — supports thyroid hormone production and T4 to T3 conversion, particularly relevant when stress is contributing to thyroid dysfunction

Anti-inflammatory — reduces the chronic inflammation that drives fatigue, brain fog, and immune dysregulation

Withania may be worth exploring if you experience:

  • Chronic stress, burnout, or feeling constantly overwhelmed

  • Anxiety or an inability to switch off

  • Exhaustion that sleep does not fix

  • Poor sleep quality or waking unrefreshed

  • Hormonal imbalances — particularly low progesterone or irregular cycles

  • Subclinical thyroid dysfunction

  • Brain fog and poor concentration

  • Slow physical recovery or reduced exercise tolerance

Therapeutic dose is typically 300–600mg per day of a standardised root extract. Withania is contraindicated in pregnancy and should be used with caution in autoimmune conditions and thyroid disorders requiring monitoring. Always work with a qualified practitioner before supplementing.
